Crawford's three-hitter helps Raiders to series-closing win

ASHLAND – Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon took turns beating up on each other's aces and went halves on the final doubleheader of the regular season, with the Mountaineers taking a 14-1 decision and the Raiders winning 8-1 on Saturday afternoon at University Field.

EOU got the Cascade Conference counter and triggered the mercy rule after five innings thanks to an 11-run third inning that was highlighted by Cheyenne Barker's towering three-run homer, her 13th of the season. SOU bounced back from that ugly performance, which included five errors, behind Lacie Crawford's career-high nine strikeouts in a complete-game three-hitter.

With the Game 1 win, the Mountaineers (28-17 overall, 17-10 CCC) locked up the No. 4 seed for next weekend's Cascade Conference Tournament in Salem. The Raiders (37-12, 20-7) tied Oregon Tech for second in the standings but will get the No. 2 seed on head-to-head tiebreaker criteria. After a first-round bye, they'll open the double-elimination tourney at 4:30 p.m. Friday against OIT or the yet-to-be-determined No. 6 seed.

SOU starter Karlee Coughlin (13-1) took her first collegiate loss in the opener after getting chased in the decisive third, which took three Raider pitcher to close out. Barker was one of seven players to drive in at least one run as the Mountaineers had 15 at-bats in the frame. Chelsea Spanier went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, Maryssa Santi went 2-for-2 with three runs and Lena Richard went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Alexis Spence (4-0) pitched all five innings for EOU in a four-hitter. She shut out the Raiders until Kelsey Randall drove in Kristen Mauroschadt with two outs in the fifth.

Crawford, celebrating her Senior Day got the Raiders settled down in Game 2, allowing only a third-inning run to improve to 3-3. She finished an outstanding month of April with four complete games and just six earned runs allowed in 26 2/3 innings pitched.

The Raider lineup was also spurred by seniors: Kayleen Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a two-run triple in the fourth, Taylor Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the third and Nicole Cardoza went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI singles. Aaliyah Oliver, another senior, got the Raiders on the board with a two-run single to right in the second inning.

Harlee Donovan, who set SOU's single-season RBI record Friday, also drove in her 53rd run of the season on a bunt single in the fourth.

The Raiders defeated EOU pitcher Hailey Kline for the second time in as many days. She lasted 3 1/3 innings and gave up eight hits and seven runs.
