SACRAMENTO, Calif. –
Sienna Ramirez took third at 143 pounds to lead eight placers for the Southern Oregon University women's wrestling team Saturday at the Cliff Keen West Coast Tournament of Champions.
Ramirez, a sophomore, went 4-1 on the day in her 13-person bracket. Three freshmen also highlighted the Raiders' efforts:
Tara Othman placed fourth of 17 in 116 pounds,
Karrah Smith was fourth of 18 at 170 and Carolina Johnson took fifth at 109.
Nevina DeLuca (123) and
Anesia Ramirez (130) notched sixth-place efforts, while
Olivia Pizano (155) and
Taea Regua (170) checked in at seventh in their respective brackets.
SOU was fourth in the team points standings.
Ranked fourth among NAIA wrestlers, Ramirez opened with first-round pins of Menlo's Brittany Woods-Orrison (2:53) and unattached competitor Ophelia Lara (1:38). Menlo's Angela Peralta sent her to the consolation bracket with a 6-3 decision, but Ramirez bounced back with wins over Wayland Baptist's Marina Briceno (11-6) and Menlo's Marilyn Garcia (10-5) in the third-place match.
Othman, ranked 10th at 116, went 3-2 with a pair of bonus-point victories. One of them, an 11-0 technical fall over York's Emily Fergeson, advanced her to the third-place match.
Smith also went 3-2, opening with a pin and a technical fall. Another technical fall, 12-2 over Southwestern Oregon's Adriana Orozco, got her out of the consolation semifinals.
Johnson went 4-2 and captured fifth place with an 8-4 win against Pauline Granados in her placing match.
The Raiders will be back in action Jan. 4-5 at the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky.
