ASHLAND – Southern Oregon University senior
Tristen Holmes joined elite company on Thursday when he was named to the NAIA's Google Cloud Academic All-America second team, as nominated and voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Holmes, a point guard for the Raider men's basketball team, is just the 13th student-athlete in SOU history to be selected to a CoSIDA Academic All-America team and was one of 10 players recognized across the country. Eric Thompson and Tim Weber, both second-teamers in 2015, are the only Raider men's basketball players to have previously earned the distinction.
The program is designed to recognize student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom and is considered to be the most prestigious of all the academic honors.
A two-time All-Cascade Conference performer and North Medford product, Holmes is an interdisciplinary studies major focusing on pre-dentistry with a cumulative GPA of 3.84. The McNair Scholar has been accepted to attend Oregon Health & Science University in Portland this fall.
He averaged 16.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists this season. During CCC regular-season player, he was the circuit's only individual to rank among the top-15 in all three categories.
Holmes made 98 career starts and finished with 1,412 points, 577 rebounds and 453 assists, making him the lone member of SOU's 1,000-500-400 club. He finished at No. 3 in assists and No. 12 in scoring in the program record book.
He and the Raiders finished with a 21-11 record this season, falling in the CCC tournament championship game at College of Idaho. In his four-year SOU career, he totaled 83 victories.
