GULF SHORES, Alabama – Southern Oregon University begins competition at the 68th annual NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium with reasons to be optimistic across the board.

The Raiders have 17 athletes in the field – they'll be in nine men's and seven disciplines – and all but three of them own top-12 seeds. Zach Beltz is the top seed in both the long jump and triple jump, and he's one of eight Raiders at the meet with indoor, outdoor or cross country All-America credentials.

The Raider men have won 13 all-time outdoor event titles, including three since 2014. The women have won nine and captured one in four consecutive seasons before last year.

Below is an event-by-event overview:

WOMEN'S EVENTS
HEPTATHLON
8:30 a.m. Thursday: 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m
8:30 a.m. Friday: Long Jump, Javelin, 800m
SOU Entry (16 total): Loghan Sprauer, 4,536 (9th)
Of Note: Following another outstanding all-around effort in the Cascade Conference Championships, Sprauer is back in the NAIA heptathlon field for the second year in a row. After winning the CCC title in 2018, she placed third this year but posted the top score of her career (4,536) and will try to become SOU's first All-American in the discipline since Jill Carrier's 1995 national title. She placed 15th last year with 3,452 points, but that score was hampered by a foul-out in the javelin and a hurdles mishap.

400 METERS
Trials: 1:30 p.m. Friday
Final: 2:30 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entry (22 total): Arianna Daniel, 56.65 (11th)
Of Note: After making CCC history as the first individual to win three consecutive 400 conference titles, Daniel will try to join Tiwana Merritt as the only multi-time All-Americans in the outdoor 400. She took eighth place last year with a time of 56.74, and at this year's NAIA Indoor Championships she was sixth in 56.28. Including relays and indoor, she enters the meet a five-time overall All-American.

3,000-METER STEEPLECHASE
Trials: 4:50 p.m. Thursday
Final: 12 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entries: Bree Weber, 11:08.07 (7th); Jenna Storms, 11:12.51 (12th)
Of Note: The two fastest steeplers in Raider history will run their final races this weekend trying to deliver SOU's first-ever top-eight finish in the event. They were both in the race last year, when Storms placed 15th and Weber 17th, but Weber has cut five seconds off her school-record PR and Storms nine seconds off hers in the time since. Their race at the CCC meet – which featured 12 of the top-20 times in the NAIA, with Weber placing eighth and Storms 10th – qualified as a preview of this one.

4x100-METER RELAY
Trials: 12:30 p.m. Thursday
Final: 12:40 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entries (21 total): Erika Soderstrom, Savannah Greenwade, Julia Delucchi, Arianna Daniel, Loghan Sprauer, 47.36 (11th)
Of Note: Coming off their third consecutive CCC title, the Raiders will go for a third consecutive top-eight NAIA finish as the No. 11 seed in the 4x100. They placed sixth in 2017 and eighth in 2018; before then, only one SOU relay team had placed at the outdoor meet: the 2002 4x100 squad, which took sixth.

4x400-METER RELAY
Trials: 5:45 p.m. Friday
Final: 4:15 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entries (21 total): Arianna Daniel, Julia Delucchi, Savannah Greenwade, Loghan Sprauer, 3:54.16 (10th)
Of Note: The Raiders have fallen just short of the 4x400 final the last two seasons, placing ninth in the 2017 prelims and 10th in 2018. They're back as the No. 10 seed, and Daniel and Greenwade have been part of all three quartets.

POLE VAULT
Final: 1 p.m. Thursday
SOU Entry (24 total): Joanna Galli, 3.65m (11-11 ¾) (11th)
Of Note: Since first competing for the Raiders in April, Galli, a senior, has demonstrated All-America potential and is fresh off a CCC title performance in which she recorded a season best. SOU last produced an All-American in the discipline in 2014, when Stephanie Techler won a national title as the No. 8 seed by clearing 12-1 ½.

HAMMER
Final: 8 a.m. Friday
SOU Entry (26 total): KiAshe Hobby, 50.34m (165-2) (18th)
Of Note: During her freshman season, Hobby has already crushed SOU's hammer record by a margin of 8 ½ feet. She posted her top throw to capture SOU's first CCC title in the event since 2003. No Raider has ever been a hammer All-American.

MEN'S EVENTS
800 METERS
Trial: 12:20 p.m. Friday
Final: 3 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entry (26 total): AJ Sandvig, 1:52.17 (9th)
Of Note: Already an All-America threat as a freshman, Sandvig proved his big-race mettle two weeks ago by taking runner-up honors at the CCC Championships. His inexperience won't be uncommon on the national stage: Of the top-10 seeds, four are freshmen.

1,500 METERS
Trials: 1:40 p.m. Thursday
Final: 1:10 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entry (16 total): Ryan Alexander, 3:54.37 (11th)
Of Note: Alexander, a senior, will make his NAIA Outdoor Championships debut as the No. 11 seed in the 1,500, a race in which the Raiders won national titles in 2014 (Eric Avila) and 2016 (Jared Hixon). They haven't had a top-eight finish since Hixon's win, and Alexander is coming off a sixth-place showing at the CCC Championships – a race that featured four of the top-seven seeds in this national field.

5,000 METERS
Trials: 5 p.m. Friday
Final: 3:55 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entries (24 total): Ben Harter, 14:49.66 (12th); Noah Oberriter, 14:55.30 (21st)
Of Note: Harter and Oberriter are entered for both the 5K and 10K races, and this will be the second of the pair after Thursday night's 10K final. Oberriter, a senior, is back for the second year after placing 16th in the prelims and 11th in the finals in 2018, and he's already a two-time NAIA Cross Country All-American. In a loaded field at the CCC Championships, he placed fifth and Harter sixth. SOU's only previous All-American in the race is Dylan Alexander, who won the 2015 title and was third a year later.

10,000 METERS
Final: 6:45 p.m. Thursday
SOU Entries (20 total): Noah Oberriter, 30:38.76 (3rd); Ben Harter, 31:06.07 (9th)
Of Note: Oberriter and Harter will bring higher seeds to the 10K after both sat out the race at the CCC Championships. SOU has turned in all four of its All-American efforts in the race since 2012, with Connor Cushman's sixth-place showing in 2017 being the best. The Raiders haven't had multiple All-Americans in the same discipline since the 1,500 final in 2014.

110-METER HURDLES
Trials: 11:45 a.m. Friday
Final: 1:40 p.m. Saturday
SOU Entry (28 total): Rhett Gonzalez, 14.52 (8th)
Of Note: Sullivan Stevens' sixth-place effort in 2012 stands as the Raiders' only top-eight finish in the 110 hurdles, and Gonzalez is their first qualifier since. The senior won five consecutive races to start the season before a second-place finish at the CCC Championships, and he became an Indoor All-American in March by placing sixth in the 60-meter hurdles.

LONG JUMP
Final: 11 a.m. Friday
SOU Entry (30 total): Zach Beltz, 7.87m (25-10) (1st)
Of Note: Voted the NAIA West Region Field Athlete of the Year last week, Beltz will try to cap his decorated career with a national title. The Raiders haven't won one in a field event since Ryan Musselman took the pole vault in 2008, and Beltz is already the only long-jump All-American in Raider history – placing fourth as a sophomore, sixth as a junior and fifth at this year's Indoor Championships. He's claimed first place in all seven outdoor meets this season and recorded his new PR while winning a fourth consecutive CCC championship. He's the No. 1 seed by a margin of 4 ¾ inches.

TRIPLE JUMP
Final: 11:30 a.m. Saturday
SOU Entry (30 total): Zach Beltz, 15.42m (50-7 ¼) (1st)
Of Note: Beltz shot to the top of this year's NAIA performance list by improving his PR by 2 feet 8 ¾ inches and is the top seed in this discipline, too, by a margin of 2 ½ inches. He's been in the triple jump field twice before, placing 23rd as a sophomore and 25th as a junior, and hopes to deliver SOU's first All-America performance in the discipline since Nick Hanson placed sixth in 2005.

POLE VAULT:
Final: 11 a.m. Saturday
SOU Entry (30 total): Adam O'Brien, 4.75m (15-7) (8th)
Of Note: O'Brien, another freshman, earned automatic-qualifier status with a third-place effort at the CCC Championships and is one of nine individuals in the field with the same season best. SOU is 11 years removed from its last All-America showing in the event but has produced two national champions: Robbie Johnston (2005) and Ryan Musselman (2008).

JAVELIN
Final: 4:30 p.m. Thursday
SOU Entry (27 total): Dylan Knostman, 57.24m (187-9) (20th)
Of Note: Knostman qualified in his first season with SOU and will be the first Raider in action Thursday on the men's side. He recorded his season-best in his debut meet and placed fifth at the CCC Championships with a mark of 179-3.
