Santander scores lone goal as SOU shuts out EOU for key road win

LA GRANDE – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team didn't let the devastation of Friday's last-minute loss linger for long.

On Saturday night at Community Stadium, the Raiders made a swift and critical recovery by downing Eastern Oregon 1-0 in a Cascade Conference match, spoiling the rival Mountaineers' senior night and likely their championship aspirations.

The Raiders hadn't defeated or scored a goal against EOU since 2016, but they got the only one they needed in the seventh minute when defender Jordan Ball sent a ball to Mia Santander, who volleyed it into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season and third game-winner.

In bouncing back from their 2-1 loss at College of Idaho, the Raiders went to 8-4-1 overall and 6-2 in the CCC. They, C of I and Corban are the two-loss teams behind first-place Oregon Tech, which at 7-1 took its only loss against SOU.

The Mountaineers, who were the preseason favorites to win the CCC, lost both of their games this weekend and three of their last five to drop to 9-4 and 6-3. They're the third team picked ahead of SOU that the Raiders have beaten.

The Raiders pulled it off despite putting only one other shot, Malaika Quigley's, on goal, though Kaya Baird hit the post shortly after Santander's score.

Ashlynn Hernandez registered four saves to secure SOU's seventh and her fourth shutout of the season.

The Raiders' back line limited the Mountaineers to 11 total shots.

With four regular season games remaining, they'll return home next week to face Bushnell on Friday and Corban on Sunday.
