SOU shuts down Beacons, moves into 2nd place in CCC

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team stayed hot and moved into a second-place tie by handily defeating Bushnell on Friday afternoon, 3-0 in Cascade Conference play at Raider Stadium.

The Raiders' sixth win in seven outings made them 9-4-1 overall and 7-2 in the CCC. It was the product of goals from Gabbie Johnson, Phoebe Bunn and Natalie Paul, as well as goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez's fifth and the team's eighth shutout of the season.

The Raiders climbed in the standings over Corban, which will visit Ashland at 1:30 p.m. Sunday on the heels of its 1-0 loss to first-place Oregon Tech. The Owls remain three points up at 8-1, and SOU remains tied with College of Idaho behind them.

Johnson finally got the Raiders on the board against the Beacons a minute before halftime by heading in her first goal, set up by a perfect cross from Malaika Quigley.

They didn't strike again until the 87th minute, when Jasmine Gray drew a foul in the box for a penalty kick that Bunn cashed in for her second goal of the season.

With one second left on the clock, Paul completed her long trip down the field on a breakaway and joined Johnson with her first goal on a five-yard shot.

Hernandez made three saves to keep the sheet clean. SOU controlled the action in front of her, compiling advantages of 17-5 in shots and 8-0 in corner kicks.

Bushnell fell to 4-11 and 2-8 in the CCC.
