ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team kept rolling Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium, scoring three straight after giving up an early penalty kick to defeat Carroll (Mont.) 3-1 for its fourth consecutive Cascade Conference win.
Carroll's Kody Clements converted in the 10th minute , but the lead lasted just 90 seconds as
Baylee Touey crossed to
Kaya Baird for a short equalizer in the 12th.
Ruth Hegstad had the go-ahead goal two minutes later – her first of the season – with a 13-yard shot inside the left post off an assist from
Malaika Quigley.
The Raiders limited the Saints' chances from that point on and got some insurance from Quigley in the 62nd minute, as she headed in
Trinity Rhoades' cross to account for the final tally.
The Raiders brought their record to 7-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the CCC, and set up a monster upcoming week on the road. Next Friday and Saturday they'll visit Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho, which sit atop the standings with matching 6-1 records.
SOU is off to its best start in CCC play since winning the regular season title in 2016.
The Saints dropped to 5-5-1 and 4-3-1.
Raider keeper
Ashlynn Hernandez only needed to make two saves to keep them off the board for the final 80 minutes thanks to stingy play on the back line from Rhoades,
Jordan Bell,
Sophia Connell and
Brionna Wood.
In total, the Raiders generated 15 shots to Carroll's six.
They've gotten their seven game-winning goals from six different players, Hegstad being the latest.
