RENO, Nev. – A few tight decisions went third-ranked Southeastern (Fla.)'s way and swung the team score in the Fire's 26-13 dual win over Southern Oregon on Friday night at the Reno Convention Center.
The Raiders (3-4 overall) banked two upsets in the matchup and raced out to a 10-0 lead.
Pancho Barrera – who climbed to No. 13 in this week's latest NAIA 125-pound rankings – opened with a dominant 9-0 major decision over 16th-ranked Esau Bazilme, and 19th-ranked
Evan Potter defeated Xavier Williamson 5-2 at 133 pounds.
Nick Peterson completed the perfect start by knocking off 11th-ranked Kael Brisker 8-2 at 141 pounds.
JJ Talavera scored SOU's other upset at 157 pounds, topping 16th-ranked Sal Silva 12-5. Heavyweight
Jacob Bernstein nearly pulled off another one against seventh-ranked Jesse Pryor but lost 3-1 in a sudden victory.
Pryor's win was the Fire's fifth in a row to end the matchup. Included in the run was Wyatt Kirkham's 4-3 defeat of
Max Miller at 165 and Stephen Kelle's sudden victory over
Noah Talavera at 174.
SEU moved to 5-0 in dual matches.
