HAVRE, Mont. – Southern Oregon split 10 matches with 18th-ranked Montana State-Northern, but the bonus points were in the Lights' favor as they pulled out a 26-21 Cascade Conference dual win Thursday night at Armory Gymnasium.
SOU led 18-6 through five matches before the meat of the Lights' lineup came through with four straight bonus-point victories. The run started with ninth-ranked Chase Short's technical fall over
Max Miller at 165 pounds, continued as NaKoda Siegel (174) and 12th-ranked Carl Hansen (184) won by major decision and technical fall over
Noah Talavera and
Ayden Wolgamott, and was punctuated by top-ranked Isaac Bartel (197) with a first-round pin of
John White.
MSU-Northern went to 3-1 in dual matches and SOU dropped to 1-2.
The top half of the Raiders' lineup had another strong showing in the loss.
Pancho Barrera started the night with a 12-1 major decision over Kaleb Frank at 125, and freshman 133-pounder
Evan Potter came away with the most impressive win of the night in a pin of 11th-ranked Nick Kunz with 23 seconds left in the third period.
SOU's
Travis Thorpe won by decision at 149, 5-2 over Georgino Moraga, and
Aaron Gandara extended the team lead to 12 at 157 with a tech-fall shutout of Connor Harris. Heavyweight
Jacob Bernstein ended the matchup on a high note with a 2-1 win over Ryan Moldenauer.
The Raiders will have two more duals on Friday at the Battle of the Rockies in Great Falls, Mont. They'll face host Providence (Mont.) at 1 p.m. and Dickinson State (N.D.) at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, then compete individually on Saturday in the Battle of the Rockies Tournament.
