GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Southern Oregon men's wrestling team split a pair of contests Friday in the Battle of the Rockies duals, bringing its season record to 2-3.
After taking Montana State-Northern to the brink a night earlier, the Raiders lost their lead in the final two matches of another close setback against Providence (Mont.), 23-17. They bounced back with a 44-3 win over Dickinson State (N.D.), taking the first nine weight classes and registering four pins.
Three straight Raiders won by fall against DSU: 157-pounder
JJ Talavera, 165-pounder
Max Miller and 174-pounder
Noah Talavera, all in the first round.
John White later added another first-round pin at 197.
SOU was up 17-9 through seven contests against Providence before dropping the final three. Liam Swanson's pin at 197 put the Argos up for good and heavyweight KC Buday clinched the win with a technical fall.
Up to that point,
Aaron Gandara (157) and
Max Miller (165) had registered technical falls,
Pancho Barrera (125) won by major decision and
Noah Talavera (174) pulled out a decision to put the Raiders in position to win.
SOU will remain in Great Falls to compete Saturday at the Battle of the Rockies tournament, starting at 8 a.m. Pacific Time.
