Raider lineup explodes in wins against Providence

ASHLAND Lauren Quirke blasted two towering home runs in No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon's 9-0 and 18-1 wins over Providence (Mont.) on Friday afternoon, which both ended in five innings in Cascade Conference play at University Field.

Quirke's fourth and fifth homers of the season were part of a 4-for-5 afternoon that included a triple, a double, six RBIs and four runs scored. She pitched three scoreless innings in Game 2 and left with a 13-0 lead to earn a win that made her 10-2 in the circle, too.

Outs proved elusive all over the lineup for the Raiders, who shot to 28-2 overall and 13-1 in the CCC. Tayler Walker enjoyed a 4-for-5 day with a double and three RBIs; Allie Stines went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple; Hannah Shimek had three hits, scored five runs, tripled and drove in two; and Olivia Mackey was on base five times with three hits, two walks and three runs scored.

Left fielder Katrina Winterburn also contributed a 3-for-3 Game 1 outing in support of starter Gabby Sandoval, who struck out 10 in a four-hit complete game.

Sandoval's shutout was her sixth of the season. She improved to 15-0, reaching double figures in strikeouts for the third time in five starts.

Stines' extra-base hits gave her 28 on the season and brought her doubles total to 20 – five away from the CCC record she set in 2019. Meanwhile, Quirke's day upped her CCC-best batting average to .526

Quirke's introduced herself in the first inning of Game 1 with a two-run bomb that she pulled well over the right-field fence. In Game 2, she went to dead center with another two-run homer that made the score 15-0.

Ten different Raiders registered a hit in Game 2. They amassed 26 on the day, and in the nightcap were aided with seven walks and three errors.

Peyton Elliot accounted for four of Providence's 11 hits on the day. The Argos fell to 2-16 and 2-12 in CCC play.

The teams will play two more Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
