LA GRANDE –
Bryce Goggin took down a meet record and
Kevin VanDyke made a major breakthrough for the Southern Oregon University men's track and field team Friday on Day 1 of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Goggin beat a CCC finals mark that stood for 25 years by three-hundredths of a second, clocking in at 14.46 seconds to win SOU's first such title since 2013. And in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, VanDyke won in 9:18.67 with an 11-second PR in his final appearance in the race after placing fifth or sixth in his first three tries.
As a team, the defending-champion Raiders sit in third place with 89 points, trailing College of Idaho (122) and Eastern Oregon (108).
They produced five additional All-CCC performances: runner-up finishes from the 4x100 relay team,
Trevor Holt in the hammer and
Zeke Stelzer in the steeplechase, and third-place finishes from
Joseph Dotson in the long jump and
Luigi Gonzalez in the hammer.
Goggin had no margin for error in his run, which edged College of Idaho's Lane Maher by two-hundredths of a second. He moved up to 15th on the NAIA performance list with his 'A' mark and to No. 2 in SOU's record book.
Justin Hall also scored in the race in sixth place (15.82).
VanDyke – who came in as the No. 2 seed in the steeple behind Stelzer – broke EOU's facility record by nearly seven seconds and became an automatic qualifier for the NAIA Outdoor Championships for the first time, taking over the No. 5 slot on the national list. Stelzer was also sharp, running in 9:23.86, and will join VanDyke at the national meet.
In the hammer, Holt's throw of 183 feet 8 inches was just 1-5 behind champion Bryan Terry of College of Idaho. His new 'A' standard bumped him to No. 14 in the NAIA, and Gonzalez pushed him at 181-3.
Eastern Oregon snapped SOU's 4x100 winning streak at four. The Raiders finished in 41.95 seconds, 0.13 behind the Mountaineers, with
Shane McLaughlin,
Chris Rosero,
Aidan Tank and
Bryce Goggin.
Dotson's mark of 22-5 ¼ was a new personal best in the long jump. It made him an All-CCC performer for the seventh time in his career.
In the long jump,
Jacob Williams and
Josh Washington tied for sixth place at 6-1 ½.
Shane McLaughlin added a fifth-place showing in the 400 (50.43), and
Isaac Fernandez was sixth in the 1,500 (4:04.81).
Events begin Saturday at 11 a.m. in the field and 2 p.m. on the track.
