ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University women's wrestling team was named the Cascade Conference's Under Armour Team of the Week and 136-pounder
Bella Amaro earned Rize Laboratory Athlete of the Week honors, the CCC office announced Monday.
The No. 1-ranked Raiders dominated their first two duals of the season, first defeating No. 8 Menlo (Calif.) – the favorite in the CCC preseason coaches' poll – by a 36-8 score on Thursday at Bob Riehm Arena. They won all but one match and earned bonus points in six of them, getting pins from
Carolina Moreno,
Emily Se and
Grace Kristoff. Two days later, they had a 35-10 upper hand in their first-ever meeting with Linfield as
Averie Stockwell and
Joye Levendusky won by fall.
Amaro, a freshman from Oregon City currently ranked No. 8 in the NAIA at 136, won her matches in both duals. Against Menlo she scored a 6-1 decision over No. 15-ranked Louisa Schwab, and against Linfield she triumphed by 12-0 technical decision over Brielle Brick. The two-time prep state champion sits at 8-2 on the season.
SOU competes next at the WCWA National Duals in Louisville, Ky., on Jan. 7-8.
