RENO, Nev. – Southern Oregon and No. 8-ranked Marian (Ind.) split eight contested weight classes, but two forfeits were the difference as the Raiders triumphed 25-14 in Friday's dual portion of the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Andrew Herrera, SOU's junior 197-pounder, pulled off a major upset in his dual-clinching victory. He knocked off No. 7 Jack Servies in overtime with a 7-5 sudden victory, making the score 22-14 ahead of a heavyweight match in which Raider redshirt-freshman
Antonio Garcia topped Austin Lane, 9-3.
A couple of top-10 individuals supplied SOU's other wins. At 149, No. 7
Aaron Gandara enjoyed an 8-0 major decision over Ricky Hegedus. And at 174,
Alex Hernandez protected his No. 10 ranking by controlling No. 11 Noah Hollendonner for a 9-4 decision.
Mitch Warren (125) and
Evan Potter (133) were awarded forfeit victories, giving the Raiders a 12-0 advantage off the bat.
They improved to 6-1 on the season and won't wrestle another dual until visiting No. 9 Menlo (Calif.) on Jan. 6. On Sunday, they'll compete in the Reno TOC tournament.
For Marian, No. 4-ranked 165-pounder Elliott Rodgers had a technical fall. No. 3 Samo Osho (184), No. 8 Bailey Moore (157) and Aundre Beatty (141) won by decision.
