ENTRIES/LIVE RESULTS | MEET SCHEDULE | CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM
ASHLAND – An injury-plagued spring and British Columbia's dominance will likely take the Southern Oregon men's team out of title contention, but the Raiders boast several individual threats at the Cascade Conference Track and Field Championships presented by U.S. Bank.
The meet returns to Raider Stadium this week, with events starting at noon Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The Raiders, who have won five championships in the last 10 years and a CCC-best 10 in the conference's history, are coming off a third-place finish at last year's meet. College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon are the defending co-champions, but UBC wasn't present at the 2021 meet and enters this one with an eye-popping 26 national-qualifying marks.
WHAT TO WATCH
SPRINTS/HURDLES: Shane McLaughlin, who was top-six in three individual events last year, will feature heavily again as the No. 7 seed in the 100 meters (11.06), the No. 4 seed in the 200 (22.23) and the No. 6 seed in the 400 (50.48).
Blake Morgan, after finishing just outside of scoring position in 2021, is the No. 6 seed in the 100 (11.04), while
Cade O'Connor owns SOU's top marks in the 400 (50.20, 5th) and the 400 hurdles (54.79, 4th).
DISTANCE: UBC's embarrassment of riches is especially prevalent in the distance races, but
AJ Sandvig will attempt to steal a win in the 800 after placing second in the CCC and 10th nationally in 2019, his last postseason appearance. Sandvig is the No. 4 overall seed with a time of 1:52.98 that ranks 24th in the NAIA and makes him a provisional national qualifier. The CCC features nine national qualifiers in the 1,500, where
Garrett Beutel (3:58.42) and
Luke Lucchesi (4:08.75) will take their turns, and 11 more in the 5K, where the Raiders will insert
Asher Tatsumi (15:35.68).
Isaac Fernandez scored last year in the 1,500 and 5K but will run the 10K (33:26.90) alongside
Jensen Salvatori (32:51.40), who turned in an eighth-place finish in 2021.
RELAYS: The Raiders own the No. 2 seed in the 4x100 (42.09) and the top seed in the 4x400 (3:21.08). McLaughlin is the lone returner from last year's relay squads, which won the 4x4 title for the first time since 2017 and placed second in the 4x1 after capturing nine of the previous 10 conference championships.
JUMPS: Two-time NAIA All-American and two-time All-CCC performer
Adam O'Brien is the defending champion in the pole vault and enters this meet as the No. 2 seed (4.80m), his entry mark just a quarter-inch behind Eastern Oregon's Darrian Walker. In the high jump,
Jacob Williams (1.88m) is the No. 5 seed and looking to improve on a sixth-place finish in 2021.
Jacob Trone is vying for All-CCC recognition as a freshman with the No. 3 seeds in both the long jump (6.83m) and triple jump (13.70m).
THROWS: The Raiders' team score will depend heavily on their throwers, with five entries in the discus, five in the shot put and four in the hammer.
Andrew Mitchell is the No. 2 seed in the discus (46.68m) and owns an NAIA 'A' mark in the javelin (57.40m) as the No. 5 seed.
Matthew O'Henley – who last year placed fifth in the discus and seventh in the hammer – is the No. 2 seed in the hammer with a 'B' mark of 54.30m that ranks 24th in the NAIA.
Tre Holmes, formerly an all-conference lineman for the Raider football team, has the team's top mark in the shot put at 14.48m, the seventh-best in the conference.
