NAIA basketball selection shows coming Thursday

2/28/2023 10:34:00 AM

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's and women's basketball teams will watch intently when the 64-team NAIA National Tournament fields are revealed Thursday by the national office.

The women's selection show is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the men's show will follow at 5 p.m. Both will be broadcast live on the NAIA YouTube channel. Previous reports incorrectly stated that the brackets would be released Wednesday.

Both SOU teams are hoping for at-large bids after falling in the semifinal rounds of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank.

The Raider women own a 23-7 record and were No. 28 in the final NAIA coaches' poll released last week. Six of their seven losses were against teams currently among the top-12, and the best win on their résumé is a 51-47 decision against Carroll (Mont.) that jump-started their season at home on Oct. 27. A bid to the National Tournament would be their seventh in eighth seasons.

The Raider men, seeking to make the national postseason for the first time since 2020, stand at 20-10 and went 15-7 in the Cascade Conference to claim the No. 3 seed. Both teams ahead of them in the standings, No. 1 College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon, already collected automatic bids.

The Round of 64 and 32 will take place on campus site across the country March 7 and 8. The last 16 teams standing in both brackets will be at the final sites – Sioux City, Iowa, for the women, and Kansas City, Mo., for the men – from March 13-18.
