ASHLAND – The No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team was only favored in four matches but claimed seven to score a 26-13 dual win against Cascade Conference rival No. 15 Eastern Oregon on Saturday night at Riehm Arena.
The most convincing upset of the night belonged to 197-pounder
Asher Ruchti, a junior Oregon State transfer who debuted for the Raiders with a 9-1 major decision over No. 11 Eric Kara. By that point, however, the outcome was already decided.
SOU (5-0 overall) led 18-0 through five matchups, mixing in a pin for No. 2
Evan Potter (141) with wins by decision from No. 12
Vonn Fenn (125),
Dylan Clark (133), No. 24
Travis Thorpe (149) and No. 4
Aaron Gandara (157).
Clark, a freshman from Klamath Falls, erased a 4-2 deficit on a takedown of Kai Carson with a minute remaining, then broke a 5-5 tie 30 seconds later with another. Thorpe upset No. 21 Jaxon Morlan, 8-6, and Gandara won his Top 25 matchup in a 5-0 shutout of No. 20 AJ Rockwell.
No. 4
Alex Hernandez (174) added a major decision before Ruchti tacked on his.
EOU's wins came from No. 15 Michael Fox (165) by decision, No. 4 Kyle Knudtson (184) by fall and No. 7 Nico Rodriguez (285) by major decision.
The Raiders have won three straight duals against EOU and four of their last five in the series.
They'll send a group Sunday to Pacific's Mike Clock Open and have their next duals Friday against Simpson and San Francisco State in Redding, Calif.
