King notches NAIA 'B' mark in shot put at SOU's indoor debut

NEWBERG – Making his season debut, Southern Oregon senior Luke King met the NAIA Indoor Championships provisional-qualifying standard in the shot put Saturday at George Fox Indoor Meet No. 1.

King, who placed 12th last spring at the NAIA Outdoor Championships, recorded a mark of 51 feet 5 ½ inches to place second out of 24 in the event. He broke onto the national performance list in the No. 23 spot.

Abi Steven, an eight-time overall All-American entering her junior campaign, was the only other Raider in action in the team's first outing of the season. She qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles in 9.57 seconds and finished fifth in 9.61, then took fourth of 23 in the long jump by going 17-7.

SOU will be represented next weekend at the Whitworth Invitational in a last chance to post qualifying marks for the national indoor meet, which begins Feb. 29 in Brookings, S.D.
