CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 9-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team went 1-1 on Saturday to end its NWCA-NAIA National Dual Championships run in 11th place at the UNI-Dome.
After winning their first-round matchup and dropping a pair of consolation duals on Friday, the Raiders started Day 2 with a 28-10 loss to No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.). They secured a 38-3 win over No. 14 Montana State-Northern in their subsequent 11th-place dual, routing the Lights for the second time in three weeks.
The Raiders (14-3 overall) competed without their two highest-ranked wrestlers, No. 1
Evan Potter (141 pounds) and No. 3
Alex Hernandez (174), and the absences were costly against a Cumberlands team that boasted top-12 individuals in seven different weight classes.
No. 10
Vonn Fenn (125 pounds), No. 4
Aaron Gandara (157) and No. 5
Asher Ruchti (197) collected SOU's wins against the Patriots. Fenn blanked No. 12 Matteo Vargo in a major decision and Ruchti discarded another nationally-ranked opponent in No. 17 Greyson Stevens, 7-3.
Both the Raiders and MSU-Northern were backup-heavy in their matchup. Junior heavyweight
Ben Hughes, making his first appearance of the tournament, supplied a highlight with a 7-2 upset of the Lights' No. 12-ranked Shane Mattson.
No. 19
Simon Graeber (141) won by fall; No. 11
Dylan Clark (133) earned a technical fall; No. 19
Dylan Straley (165),
Braylin Ruchti (174) and
Carson Gooley (197) picked up major decisions; and
Jonathan Hernandez (149) and
Carlos Garcia (184) added decisions for the Raiders, who claimed the last nine weight classes.
The Raiders remain on the road next week, visiting Arizona Christian on Friday and No. 5 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Saturday. They return to Ashland on Jan. 31 to face Corban, and they'll get a rematch with No. 11 Providence (Mont.), which defeated them during Friday's action, in their home finale on Feb. 1.
