ASHLAND – The Cascade Conference announced that Southern Oregon guard
Gio Evanson was voted the McDonald's CCC Defensive Player of the Week, presented by Urban Edge Network, on Monday afternoon.
Evanson averaged 10.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocked shots during the Raiders' perfect Cascade Conference-opening weekend that included wins over Northwest (Wash.) and Evergreen (Wash.).
The 6-foot-6 sophomore from Ridgefield, Wash., registered his first career double-double on Friday against Northwest. He shot 9-of-16 with 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.
Evanson's work on the defensive end helped SOU limit its opponents to 30% combined shooting from the field.
He and the Raiders are off this week. They'll continue CCC play at home with games on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Corban and Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. against Bushnell.
