ASHLAND – In a matchup of two of the Cascade Conference's best, the No. 9-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team avenged last month's loss to No. 8 Providence (Mont.) with a convincing 25-12 dual victory on Saturday at Riehm Arena.
No. 4-ranked
Aaron Gandara's overtime win against No. 6 Hunter Hobbs at 157 pounds and
Braylin Ruchti's stirring upset of No. 14 Bridger Hall at 174 highlighted the effort, which marked the completion of a perfect Raiders home slate for the second year in a row. They've won 15 consecutive home duals dating back to the 2022-23 season and defeated seven top-15 opponents during the stretch.
Standing at 18-3 overall, SOU will have a chance to establish a new single-season program wins record in next week's dual finale against No. 21 Eastern Oregon in Prineville.
The Argos (6-2) had been the only CCC team to beat SOU, winning 24-16 on Jan. 10 at the NWCA National Duals, but the Raiders made them pay for bringing a shorthanded lineup this time around.
Diesel Del Rosario's 12-8 decision over Tanner Ulrey at 125, No. 19
Simon Graeber's second-round pin of Na'u McBrayer at 133 and No. 3
Evan Potter's 12-0 shutout of No. 14 Tristan Bremer at 133 got the Raiders off to a perfect start. Penciling in a forfeit victory at 197, they had a 19-point lead before No. 8 Jalen Vladic got Providence on the board with a decision at 149.
A stalemate ensued in a top-six matchup at 157, where Gandara and Hobbs went to overtime tied 1-1. SOU's senior All-American finished off another quality win with a takedown 45 seconds into the extra session.
After UP's No. 5 Aden Graves held off No. 14
Dylan Straley in a 4-2 decision at 165, Ruchti came through with the performance of the night. The unranked redshirt-freshman trailed No. 14 Hall – who was wrestling up a weight class – 10-1 midway through the second period and 11-5 midway through the third before registering a takedown. Still down two, he pulled off the decisive takedown with four seconds to spare for a 14-13 triumph.
The Argos took the last two matchups of the night, getting decisions from No. 5 Sawyer Hobbs (184) and No. 18 Ethan DeRoche (285).
