Raiders in the hunt for 5th place at NWCA-NAIA National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team will fight for fifth place at the NWCA-NAIA National Duals after defeating No. 10 Providence (Mont.) 22-20 in the first round, falling 21-10 to No. 4 Indiana Tech in the quarterfinals, and beating No. 11 Doane (Neb.) 27-14 in a consolation dual Friday at the UNI-Dome.

Junior 157-pounder Avant Stepherson, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA, shined with a pair of top-five wins. His 9-3 upset of top-ranked Hunter Hobbs swung the team result against Providence, which No. 2 Asher Ruchti clinched on a win by fall with SOU leading 16-15 entering his 197-pound match. Tyler Rhue (141) added a pin earlier in the contest and another against Doane.

Sophomore 125-pounder Isaac Hampton had another standout day for the Raiders, whose overall record went to 7-1. The No. 8-ranked Newberg product opened with a shutout major decision over Providence's No. 11 Kobi Johnson and he started the Indiana Tech dual with an 8-4 win against Allen Calderon. In the Doane matchup, he took top-ranked Ray Ray Harris to overtime before losing in a 4-1 sudden victory.

Heavyweight Sebastian Echeverria banked upset victories in both of his appearances. He defeated No. 13 Johnny Cruz of Indiana Tech of 4-2 decision and No. 18 Eli Criblez of Doane by 8-3 decision.

Ruchti, Kolton Malone (149) and Adrian Chavez-Morales (184) joined Echeverria, Hampton, Rhue and Stepherson with two wins apiece.

The Raiders will meet No. 6-ranked Oklahoma City at 7 a.m. PT Saturday for a spot in the fifth-place dual against Providence or No. 13 Cumberlands (Ky.). The losers will face off for seventh place.
