PLAYOFF PICTURE: Only a dozen miles away from its home pitch, the Southern Oregon men's soccer team (11-3-3 overall) has yet to get settled in at Medford's Lithia & Driveway Fields since the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank moved there in 2024. As the No. 3 seed in this year's tournament, the Raiders will try to change that and solidify their NAIA Tournament candidacy starting with Saturday's 4 p.m. quarterfinal matchup against No. 6 seed Bushnell (10-3-5).
On the heels of a 0-2-2 stretch, the Raiders were rejuvenated by a six-point weekend that capped the regular season and moved them up a couple spots in the standings. Instead of limping into the postseason as they did a year ago, they'll be near full strength with a No. 30 spot in the NAIA RPI that has them on the bubble to receive an at-large bid for the 40-team national tournament. Unbeaten regular-season champion Rocky Mountain (Mont.) secured the CCC's first automatic bid, and the second will go to the CCC Tournament winner – unless Rocky wins it, in which case it would fall to the other finalist. The Raiders wouldn't face Rocky until the final round, meaning two advancements could get them in. The semifinals are slated for Monday and the championship for Wednesday.
SOU vs. BUSHNELL: The No. 6-seeded Beacons – who finished just two points back of SOU on the table – are enjoying the best season in program history, having only previously turned in a winning conference record in 2017. They were unbeaten until going 1-3-1 over their final five games, a stretch that included a 2-2 draw against SOU on Oct. 23. The Raiders trailed that game 2-0 before coming up with a pair of goals in a span of 83 seconds in the second half, and they dictated the run of play with 19 shots to Bushnell's eight.
SOU is 11-1-2 in the all-time series and won the only previous playoff meeting, 1-0, in the 2017 semifinals. The Beacons have outscored opponents 35-16 combined with junior forwards Brady Housley (5 goals, 9 assists) and Joan Remo Morales (6 goals, 3 assists) transforming the attack and keeper Aaron Lowry sitting on a 0.9 goals-allowed average. The Raiders have rung up 27 goals and conceded 15, going 8-2 in games decided by one goal. Junior midfielder
Jonathan Gaspar (5 goals, 2 assists) has supplied three game-winners in the 85th minute or later, and
Mustafa Daggig (3 goals, 3 assists) has scoring contributions in his last four outings. They'll look for a spark from
Ariel De Dios Cruz, who leads the team with six goals but has gone without one in six straight appearances.
SOU TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Raiders haven't missed the tournament since the program's inaugural 2015 season and captured their only championship in 2017 with an overtime win against Corban. They last reached the finals in 2023 and have compiled a 10-3-5 overall record through their first nine tournament appearances. From 2018-22, they were eliminated four seasons in a row in penalty kicks. They dropped their last two quarterfinal games, including a 2-0 decision to Rocky Mountain in 2025. They'll be the higher seed in the first round for the seventh time in eight full seasons under coach
Davie Carmichael.
