TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
SALEM – By building a 16 ½-point cushion through Day 1 of the Cascade Conference Men's Wrestling Championships presented by U.S. Bank, No. 6-ranked Southern Oregon positioned itself on Friday to win another title at the Salem Armory Auditorium.
The Raiders sent eight of their 12 individuals to the semifinals and kept three more alive in the consolation brackets, accumulating 73 points compared to second-place Providence (Mont.)'s 56 ½. Overall, their wrestlers combined for 19 wins and just five losses.
They'll attempt to complete their championship defense when wrestling starts up again at 10 a.m. Saturday. Providence remains in the hunt with six semifinalists and five in the consolation rounds, while third-place Arizona Christian (53 ½ points) is still in shouting distance with 10 wrestlers still going, including four in the semis.
Still in the championship brackets for SOU are
Isaac Hampton (125 pounds),
Dylan Clark (141),
Tyler Rhue (141),
Avant Stepherson (157),
Braylin Ruchti (174),
Adrian Chavez-Morales (184),
Elias Corona (197) and
Asher Ruchti (197). Of those, only Clark, Rhue and Corona needed multiple wins to reach the semis.
Clark, an All-CCC third-place finisher as a freshman at 133 last year, surprised the field again with two tight victories. He entered the tournament unranked but knocked off Embry-Riddle's No. 23 Adam Stanley, 7-6, and Arizona Christian's No. 14 Michael Trujillo, 4-1 in overtime. He and Rhue – who went 3-0 and beat ACU's No. 21 Channing Porter, 5-2, in his quarterfinal – are on opposite sides of a bracket whose No. 1 seed was upset.
Corona dominated both of his opponents, ACU's Kaden Martin by major decision and Simpson's Luke Miller by fall. He and Ruchti, the defending 197 champion, are also on opposite sides of their bracket.
In consolation action, the Raiders will have
Kyle Sieminski (125),
Cole Zoller (157) and
Jackson Potts (174) going on Saturday. Each of them bounced back from quarterfinal losses with consolation wins. In fact, all 12 Raiders appeared in the quarters.
When the Raiders won their title last year, they had nine semifinalists and a 9 ½-point lead through Day 1.
