ROSEBURG —Gabby Morfin took first in her heptathlon debut and two other Raiders competed for the Southern Oregon track and field team at the RiverHawk Multi on Monday and Tuesday at Umpqua Community College.
Morfin, a freshman from Magna, Utah, scored 3,918 points and moved to No. 4 on the NAIA heptathlon performance list en route to her first collegiate victory. On Day 1, she placed first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.68) and in shot put (28- 5 ¼), while setting personal bests and taking third in high jump (4-10 ½) and fourth in the 200-meter run (27.42). On Day 2, she placed first in long jump (17-1 ½), before finishing fifth in the javelin (87-3 ½) and eighth in the 800-meter run (2:56.26).
Zak Weddell, a freshman from Minden, Nev., finished third in the decathlon despite a string of misfortune. He jumped out to a great start on Day 1, which included personal bests in the 100-meter dash (11.64) and long jump (19-3). After that, Weddell was unable to clear the opening height in the high jump, and in the 400-meter run, the automatic timing system failed to record any of the athletes' times.
The meet officials decided to re-run the 400 on Tuesday morning before the first event of the day, essentially turning Day 2 into a strenuous six-event day for all the men in the field. Weddell and SOU coach Joseph Dotson opted to bite the bullet and chose not to re-race the event.
Weddell posted a final score of 4,568 points. He finished Day 2 with wins in the discus (120-7 ½) and 1,500 meter (4:48.97), and second-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.99) and javelin (146-11 ¾).
Freshman Johanna Heil recorded a lifetime best in the heptathlon, scoring 2,561 points and setting personal records in the 100-meter hurdles (20.07), 200-meter dash (30.35), and long jump (12-10 ¼). She also won the javelin with a throw of 107 feet 9 ¾ inches. Heil surpassed her previous heptathlon best (2,205) by 356 points.
