ASHLAND — Southern Oregon has a packed schedule this week as track and field returns to Raider Stadium, hosting the Cascade Conference Multi-Event Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Thursday and Friday and the Raider Invitational on Friday and Saturday. They're also sending three Raiders to race the 10K at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Southern California on Thursday morning.

DECATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP AT A GLANCE
10 a.m. Thursday – 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400m
10 a.m. Friday – 110m Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1,500m
SOU Entry: Zak Weddell (9th of 16, 4,568)
Of Note: Weddell made his decathlon debut at the RiverHawk Multi Meet, where he scored 4,568 points, with a bit of an asterisk. The timing for the 400-meter dash, the final event of Day 1, didn't record any times, forcing the entire field to re-run the race the next morning before the 110-meter hurdles. Weddell intentionally DNF'd the 400 to tackle Day 2 in normal decathlon fashion, but his unofficial handtime of 51.68 the previous day would've scored him 739 points. On top of that, he also no-heighted in high jump, which plummeted his overall score. Add up the 739 and even a 5-2 clearance in high jump, the freshman is looking at 5,748 points and a potential podium finish.

HEPTATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP AT A GLANCE
10:30 a.m. Thursday – 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m
10:15 a.m. Friday – Long Jump, Javelin, 800m
SOU Entries: Gabby Morfin (5th of 16, 3,918); Johanna Heil (11th, 2,561); Ali Stevens (No score)
Of Note: Since winning the heptathlon at RiverHawk Multi Meet with a score of 3,918 points, Morfin has set a personal best in long jump (5.48m/17-11 ¾) and a collegiate best in the 100 meter hurdles (15.46). The freshman is ranked fifth in the conference and sits just 275 points behind the only other frosh in the top-10 in Eastern Oregon's No 3-ranked Kalyiah Chronister (4,193). She's seeded first in long jump and top-6 in five of the other events. Morfin is joined by Heil, who scored 2,561 points at the RiverHawk Multi and Stevens, who's making her heptathlon debut.

RAIDER INVITATIONAL
What to watch - Women:

  • Lilly Pickett is chasing the NAIA 'A' standard (2:11.26)  and SOU program record (2:13.73) in her 800-meter debut. It's an achievable goal, considering the freshly minted All-American ran 1:32.18 for 600 meters this indoor season, which would be in the 2:05 ballpark if she kept the same pace for another 200 meters.
  • SOU's school record holder in pole vault, Katherine Martinez, takes flight Friday at 5 p.m. The Crescent City, Calif., native improved upon her own program record at the Chico Wildcat Invitational, where she cleared 12 feet 9 inches (3.89m) to win the meet and notch the NAIA 'A' mark. Last season, she became just the second woman in Raider history to vault over 12 feet.
  • Another vaulter, Sydney Perkins, is chasing the NAIA 'B' standard. The junior set a personal best of 11-11 ¾ at the Cal Poly Humboldt Invite. She's also No. 3 all-time on the SOU pole vault list.
  • Emily Picard is doubling in the 1,500m and the 800m. The Madras High graduate captured an Oregon State Title last season when she won the 1,500m in a personal best time of 4:46.57.
  • Another freshman, Alaina Casady, is seeded third in Friday night's 5K. She set a personal best of 18:18.32 at the Pacific Northwest Invite and made her 10,000-meter debut at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic (38:50.73)

What to watch - Men:

  • Four-time All-American Carson Le Bel is redshirting this season, but he'll be making an appearance for the home crowd this weekend. He's seeded second in both pole vault and high jump. He brought home a third-place finish in vault (15-11) at the NAIA Indoor Championships in March.
  • Freshman Josh Hepner is the top-seeded entry in the 1,500m after opening with an incredible 3:53.27 at the Pacific Northwest Invite. He's also entered in the 800m, where he holds a lifetime best of 1:54.60.
  • Another freshman, Gus Blank, is competing in the 1,500/800-meter double. Blank ran a collegiate best of 3:59.09 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, but ran 3:54.38 at last year's Nike Twilight Relays while at McMinnville High. He was slated to make his Raider debut in the 800m at last week's Chico Invitational, but was thrown awry due to lightning delays. He ran a PB of 1:53.68 at the 2025 Portland Track Festival.
  • Trey Lucas is seeded second in the 400-meter run and fourth in the 200m. The sophomore set a personal best time of 49.01 in the 400m at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational and just set another PB in the 200m (22.19) and season's best in the 100m (11.17) at the Chico Invitational.

SOU will be joined at Raider by eight visiting squads: Cal Poly Humboldt, Corban, Oregon Tech, College of the Siskiyous, Southwestern Oregon C.C., Redwoods C.C., Shasta C.C. and Umpqua C.C.

BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL NOTES:

  • Alyssa Johnson, Mason Weisgerber and Carter Stedman will be vying for the 10,000-meter 'A' standard on Thursday morning. The women's benchmark time is 36:17.00 and the men's is 30:29.00. All three Raiders are making their season debut in the event.
  • Johnson already ran an NAIA No. 3 time in the 5K this season, running 16:47.35 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Last season, she moved to No. 2 on the SOU all-time 10K list after finishing seventh in 35:43.62 at the NAIA Outdoor Championships.
  • Weisgerber and Stedman will both be competing in their second-ever 10Ks. They've been on a hot streak lately, with Weisgerber running an NAIA No. 4 5K time of 14:08.78 and Stedman a No. 9 time of 14:28.00 in San Francisco.
  • The school record for the women's 10K is 34:53.33 (Jessa Perkinson, 2018) and the men's is 30:24.63 (Eric Ghelfi, 2015).
  • The Bryan Clay Invitational is the largest collegiate meet in the United States. More than 4,000 athletes and over 400 universities will compete across the three-day event.

After the conclusion of the Raider invite on Saturday, SOU will only have one more weekend of competition before the Cascade Conference Championships in La Grande.
