AZUSA, Calif. —  Mason Weisgerber elevated the Southern Oregon distance program to a new level, becoming the first person to break 30 minutes and setting a new SOU record in the 10,000-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday morning.

The junior from Wilsonville finished in 29:49.30, running nearly 40 seconds under the NAIA 'A' standard of 30:29.00 and obliterating the previous 11-year-old school record of 30:24.63 held by Eric Ghelfi. Weisgerber's time is the fourth fastest in the NAIA this year and a 2-minute 10-second personal best. He finished 11th overall out of the 70-person field, which included talent from UCLA, Louisville, Wichita State and LSU.

Alyssa Johnson ran over a minute faster than the 'A' standard time in the 10K, crossing the line in 35:13.88. The junior from Veneta improved upon her SOU all-time No. 2 mark and moved to fifth on the NAIA performance list. It's 1 minute 6 seconds quicker than the next fastest time in the Cascade Conference. Johnson placed 23rd of 52 in another deep NCAA-loaded field.

"We had a great opportunity down here and took advantage of it," said coach Grier Gatlin. "Good weather and strong, competitive fields, which was great. Hopefully, this translates to good performances as we move through the championship part of the season."

Carter Stedman opened up his 10K Raider debut with a time of 31:19.69, qualifying for the CCC Championships in La Grande.
