ASHLAND — Zak Weddell earned All-CCC honors, placing third in the decathlon with a score of 6,026 points at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Friday at Raider Stadium.

He finished as the top freshman in the CCC circuit and made a strong case for a NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship bid, landing No. 12 on the national performance list. His score landed him No. 8 on the SOU all-time decathlon list.

Weddell started the day in eighth place and stayed there after running 16.92 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles – even after hitting the last hurdle and falling to the ground before crossing the line. He moved to sixth after throwing the discus 117 feet 10 inches (35.93m) and held the position by clearing a personal best height of 10-10 (3.30m) in pole vault.

The freshman from Minden, Nev., came through in the last two disciplines. On his final attempt in javelin, he threw a 12-foot personal best of 159-3 (48.54), launching himself to third overall in the standings. He solidified his position by running away from the rest of the field in the 1,500m, finishing in a personal best time of 4:42.85 and nearly four seconds ahead of second place.

Weddell finished 74 points ahead of fourth-place Trevor Treat (5,952) from College of Idaho and 100 points behind Eastern Oregon's Nathan Wachs. Eli Stevens of Oregon Tech was crowned champion with 6,684 points.

Ali Stevens – in her heptathlon debut – placed seventh with 3,840 points. The North Medford High graduate moved up from eighth place overall by setting personal bests in the long jump, covering 16 feet 3.5 inches (4.97m), and in the javelin, throwing 89-3 ¼ (27.21m). In the final event of the day, she placed eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.35.

Freshmen Gabby Morfin placed 12th with 3,069 points and Johanna Heil set a personal best with 2,694 points.

Eastern Oregon's Lizzy Grandle won the heptathlon with a score of 5,160 points. She finished first in five of the seven events and top-6 in the other two.

Weddell's and Steven's efforts scored six and two points, respectively, towards the Raider men's and women's team totals for the CCC Championships, which takes place at Eastern Oregon University from May 8-9.
