CORVALLIS/McMINVILLE — Sydney Perkins solidified her ticket to the NAIA national meet and five other Raiders won their events as the Southern Oregon track and field team closed its regular season at the Oregon State High Performance Meet and Linfield Open on Friday and Saturday.
Sydney Perkins highlighted the Linfield Open as she matched the NAIA automatic qualifying mark, winning the pole vault in 12 feet 4.75 inches (3.78m). The junior came in at 3.38 meters and cleared it on her first try, before going on to get over 3.53 meters, then 3.68 meters (12-0 ¾) all in one go. Perkins cleared the NAIA No. 10 mark on her first try, improving her personal best by four inches. She moved to No. 2 on the SOU all-time list.
Another vaulter, Carson Le Bel, took first in McMinville with an NAIA 'B' standard height of 15 feet 9 inches (4.80m). The senior tied with Eastern Oregon's Van Vinson, but came out on top by recording just one miss at the previous height, compared to Vinson's two. Le Bel also placed fifth in high jump (1.80m).
Meanwhile, two freshmen continued to impress with personal bests at the OSU High Performance Meet. Lilly Pickett and Gus Blank both competed in the 800 meter invite section, with Pickett finishing in an SOU No. 2 time of 2 minutes 13.98 seconds (2:13.98) and Blank in 1:53.51. Pickett's 800m was just her second ever and she finished 8-hundredths of a second off of the NAIA 'B' standard (2:13.91) and one-quarter of a second off the SOU's program record (2:13.78).
Mason Weisgerber dominated the 5,000-meter invite section in Friday night's distance carnival in Corvallis. He ran 14:17.26 and finished seven seconds ahead of British Columbia's Maximillien Filion (14:24.77). The junior came through 2,200 meters in fourth place, following two pace setters and Corban's Jack Gladfelter, before taking the lead at the 3,000-meter mark and promptly gapping the field to solo run the rest of the way.
Earlier in the evening, Stedman beat a 66-man field in the open 1,500m, winning with a personal best time of 3:53.12. The junior entered the bell lap in second place, before hawking down Pacific's Henry Tierney, who led four seconds ahead of Stedman at the 700-meter mark. His time qualified him for the Cascade Conference Championships.
Freshman Zak Weddell won two events in McMinville, earning gold in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.26 and in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.68. Another freshman, Gabby Morfin, placed first in long jump with a mark of 17 feet 10.25 inches (5.44m). She also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.24).
Alyssa Johnson also competed in the 5,000-meter invite section at OSU, running one second off of her personal best and claiming fifth with a time of 16:48.52.
Both Weisgerber and Johnson ran NAIA 5K 'A' standard marks for the second time this season. They rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in the nation for the event.
Emily Picard ran a personal best in the 1,500m (4:45.54) and Trenton Abraham made his 10,000-meter debut (32:30.96), as both Raiders qualified for the CCC Championships.
Cohen Elrod (22.78) and Isaiah Hidalgo (23.36) ran personal bests in the 200-meter and Kayla Gorchels finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a lifetime best time of 13:05.38.
The Raiders travel to Eastern Oregon next week for the Cascade Conference Championships on May 8-9.
