COLUMBUS, Ga. – More severe weather around the South Commons Complex forced the national office to make the rare move of rescheduling games for Sunday at the NAIA Softball World Series.
Southern Oregon's was one of them. The No. 3-seeded Raiders, who won 4-2 against Cumberlands (Ky.) in their tournament opener on Thursday, will play at 11:30 a.m. PT Sunday against No. 2 seed Southeastern (Fla.) or No. 7 seed College of Idaho.
Shortly after the NAIA put out one reworked schedule on Friday, lightning returned and necessitated the release of another. Of four games on the slate, 1 1/2 were completed before play was delayed and, several hours later, called off for good. Four games are now on the Saturday schedule, including the completion of an elimination contest between British Columbia and Cumberlands that was tied in the fifth inning.
SOU's second game was originally set for 4 p.m. Saturday. If the Raiders win on Sunday, they'll play at 4 p.m. Monday for a spot in Wednesday's final round. Lose, and they'll be in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Monday.
Despite numerous weather-related issues during their seven previous trips to the World Series, the Raiders had never been part of one in which games were played on a Sunday. Many NAIA members are generally resistant to the idea due to their religious affiliations.
There was good reason for the measure being taken this time around. Depending on your weather app of choice, chances of thunderstorms are hovering around 50% or greater every day for the rest of the tournament.
