SPOKANE, Wash.
– Tournament titles for Ryan McWatters and Chandler Michael were the highlights Sunday for Southern Oregon University in a stellar showing at the Spokane Open that capped the longest week of the young season.

All 12 SOU wrestlers who competed won at least one match, and Alejandro Sanvodal was third and Ryan Arand fourth to give the Raiders four placers.  They placed fourth of 19 in the team points standings, behind only Great Falls, Montana State-Northern and Simon Fraser.

"It was a good road trip and we're looking forward to some time to heal up over the holiday," SOU head coach Mike Ritchey said.

After going 2-0 as the Raiders split duals Thursday and Friday at MSU-Northern and UGF, McWatters padded his solid week with a pin followed by four straight decisions in a 5-0 day. The third-ranked 184-pounder in the NAIA stayed in total control, taking every decision by at least four points, and won the title match 8-3 over UGF's Taylor Vaughn – his second defeat of Vaughn in three days.

Michael – a freshman 149-pounder who is behind second-ranked Tyler Cowger in SOU's lineup – continued to impress with a dominant 4-0 showing that included a major decision and three pins. His wins by fall in the semifinals (against North Idaho College's Jared Sumauang) and the finals (against MSU-Northern's Drake Randall) both occurred in the first round.

At 285, Sandoval lost his second match of the day but came back with three straight victorious decisions, all by scores of 3-2, and was on the receiving end of an injury forfeit in the final. His first win of the day was also a one-point decision (2-1).

Arand, a junior 149-pounder, went 3-2 and got into the third-place match with a 12-6 win over North Idaho's Ryan Middleton in the consolation semifinals.

Hunter Hodges (157) and Reed Tennyson (174) just missed placing but were big contributors to the team point total. Hodges went 4-2 with two falls and a major decision, and Tennyson was 3-2 with two falls and a technical fall.

Trevor Hancock (141), Oscar Flores (174) and Zane Wardwell (285) each contributed two wins apiece, and Wardwell's were both pins.

The Raiders will be off until a Dec. 3 home dual against Simpson. The location of that dual has yet to be determined.
