Complete Directors' Cup Standings

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon University has positioned itself for another top finish in the NAIA's Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, coming in at No. 6 in the latest standings that were released Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Points are awarded based on individual teams' finishes at NAIA Championship events, and three of SOU's winter squads finished their respective seasons at national tournaments: women's basketball, men's basketball and men's wrestling. (Women's wrestling is not an NAIA-sanctioned sport and therefore cannot contribute to the point total.)

The Raiders were second in the standings after the fall sports season and are still the top department representing the Cascade or Frontier Conference.

The SOU women's basketball team advanced to the national championship game for the first time in team history, contributing 90 points to the department's current total of 436. The Raiders went 33-2 overall, won the CCC's regular-season and tournament titles and were No. 2 in the final NAIA Division II coaches' poll – their best ever finish in the postseason rankings.

The SOU men's wrestling team took 10th place at the NAIA Championships to score 67.5 points in the standings. The Raiders were led by four All-Americans: runners-up Tyler Cowger (149 pounds) and Ryan McWatters, and eighth-place Casey Coulter (125) and Hunter Hodges (157).

SOU's men's basketball team, which was unranked to start the season, advanced to the national tournament for the third time in four years and tied for 17th place to score 25 points. After going 24-9 –the Raiders' fourth straight season with 22-plus wins – they were No. 22 in the final coaches' poll.

During the fall, SOU got points out of four teams: football (90), women's cross country (61.5), volleyball (51) and men's cross country (51).

Last year, SOU finished sixth in the Directors' Cup standings. Its previous top finish had been 18th in 2012-13.

Biola (Calif.) currently tops the standings with 560 points. Elsewhere in the CCC, College of Idaho is 10th with 398.5 points and Northwest Christian is 32nd with 211.5. Carroll (Mont.) leads the Frontier in 17th place with 331.5 points.

The final standings will be released at the conclusion of the spring sports season.
