ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's postseason flare hasn't gone anywhere, and for the fourth time in six years the Raiders are through to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA Championship Series.

Playing at home likely for the last time this season, fifth-ranked SOU electrified Raider Stadium with a 55-24 win against No. 13 Dickinson State (N.D.) in a first-round affair on Saturday afternoon. Senior quarterback Tanner Trosin threw two touchdown passes within the first six minutes and finished with four, completing 30 of 42 passes for 384 yards and adding 85 rushing yards on eight attempts.

Now 11-0, the Raiders still haven't lost a first-round game in seven tries. Their latest was the team's highest-scoring output in any of those, and the defense made sure it stood up with five takeaways. Senior safety Oshay Dunmore earned defensive player-of-the-game honors with a sack, a forced fumble and a one-handed interception, his fourth of the season, in the fourth quarter.

Dickinson State (9-2), winner of the North Star Athletic Association championship, remained winless in its last seven trips to the postseason. Midway through the second quarter – after SOU lineman Josia Maglente-Tonu snatched an errant Hayden Gibson pass and hurdled a fallen Blue Hawk on his way to a 21-yard touchdown return – the visitors found themselves in a 31-3 hole.

All top-four seeds advanced – No. 1 Saint Francis (Ind.), No. 2 Reinhardt (Ga.), No. 3 Morningside (Iowa) and No. 4 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) – though Saint Francis needed a fourth-quarter rally to survive a 26-21 win against Benedictine (Kan.). That put SOU on the road for the quarterfinal round for its first-ever matchup with Lindsey Wilson.

Sixth-ranked Baker (Kan.) and seventh-ranked Langston (Okla.) became the first hosts to lose a first-round game in the last four seasons.

The Raiders took the air out of DSU's upset aspirations early. On their first play from scrimmage, Trosin established the tone with a 43-yard pass over the top to Parker Randle. Two plays later, his 14-yard pass over the middle to Dominic Giampaoli put SOU up for good.

Following a DSU three-and-out, Trosin went deep for a 38-yard TD to Jordan Suell that capped an eight-play drive. DSU's Cody Johnson and SOU's Marcus Montano then exchanged field goals before the Raiders got tailback Rey Vega going.

Vega, who totaled 293 rushing yards in the last two games of the regular season, took home a screen pass for a 37-yard score four minutes into the second quarter that made it 24-3. And, after Maglente-Tonu's shocking acrobatics gave the Raiders their fourth TD, Vega added the fifth on a nine-yard rush with 53 seconds left in the half, making it 38-10.

Vega finished with 40 yards rushing and 69 receiving. DSU scored on its first two possessions of the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 38-24, but Vega then added his third TD – on a drive extended by Trosin's dazzling 10-yard escape run and his 21-yard pass to Giampaoli on the sideline, both on third-and-long – with a two-yard reception from Trosin.

The Raider defense took care of the rest by forcing turnovers on three consecutive Blue Hawks drives, with interceptions from AJ Cooper and Dunmore and a fumble recovery of Gibson's fumble by John Moestopo. SOU's offense took advantage, as Michael Roots punched in a three-yard TD rush and Montano drilled a 42-yard field goal.

Dareion Bell had a team-high nine tackles, including eight solo, for the SOU. The Raiders finished with a 630-384 advantage in total offense, limiting Gibson to 201 passing yards and two TDs on 32 attempts. DSU running back Deonte Dixon amassed 105 yards on 14 carries.

Trosin had completions of 37 yards or more to four different Raiders and made connections with 11 receivers in all. Suell caught five passes for 86 yards and Giampaoli caught six for 72.

SOU's yardage total was its highest in 20 games dating back to last season.
