ASHLAND –
Jake Regino was named the NAIA Football Defensive Player of the Week, he and
Christian Graney swept Frontier Conference honors, and
Tybalt Thornberry garnered Cascade Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week recognition on Monday for Southern Oregon University.
JAKE REGINO / NAIA & Erck Hotels Frontier Football Defensive Player of the Week: Regino is the first Raider since 2017 to collect the national defensive award, doing so on the strength of his 15-tackle effort that included a strip-sack and an interception in SOU's 49-14 win over Montana Western on Saturday at Raider Stadium. The senior linebacker from Sacramento, Calif., has recorded 10 or more tackles in four consecutive games – a feat no other Raider had accomplished since 2014 – and added interceptions in two of those. At 11.8 tackles per game, he ranks first in the Frontier and fourth in the NAIA.
CHRISTIAN GRANEY / Erck Hotels Frontier Football Offensive Player of the Week: Graney compiled a season's worth of highlights against UMW, breaking SOU's single-game record with 267 reception yards on 10 catches. The senior receiver from Sanger, Calif., scored a 57-yard touchdown in the first quarter and a 70-yard TD to end the second, and he had four more catches that went for 20 or more yards. He also moved up to No. 7 on SOU's all-time receptions list, bringing his career total to 154. On the Frontier leaderboard, he's No. 2 in receptions per game (5.7), reception yards per game (90.7), and receiving TDs (4).
TYBALT THORNBERRY / Rize Laboratory Cascade Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week: Thornberry led the Raiders to a six-point weekend on the road as they won 1-0 at Carroll (Mont.) and 7-0 at Walla Walla (Wash.). He helped hold the Saints to one shot on goal Friday in Helena, and two days later he recorded a goal and an assist against the Wolves as SOU shut out its fourth consecutive opponent. He owns six assists on the season, which is the third-highest total in the CCC.
