ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's wrestling team, Raider softball pitcher
Katie Machado, and men's track and field thrower
Matthew O'Henley each collected Cascade Conference weekly awards Monday, the CCC office announced.
The Raider wrestlers made an unforgettable run to end their season, finishing second at the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Invitational to earn the CCC Under Armour Team of the Week award. They entered the tournament at No. 5 in the NAIA coaches' poll but outperformed their ranking behind an individual championship from 123-pound freshman
Carolina Moreno. Four more Raiders joined her as All-Americans: third-place
Tara Othman (116 pounds),
Sienna Ramirez (155) and
Emily Se (136), and fourth-place
Bailey Dennis (170). Four more Raiders claimed honorable mention: seventh-place
Emma Baertlein (101),
Carolina Johnson (116) and
Desinee Lopez (130), and eighth-place
Karrah Smith (191).
Six of SOU's nine placers outperformed their pre-tournament seeds. The Raiders went 7-2 collectively in placing matches.
Machado was the CCC WVT Laboratory Softball Pitcher of the Week after posting back-to-back shutouts in sixth-ranked SOU's series sweep of Providence (Mont.). The sophomore threw 12 straight scoreless innings, allowing 11 hits, striking out 11 and walking three. She improved to 8-2 and helped boost the Raiders' record to 19-5 overall and 5-1 in the CCC.
In SOU's outdoor track and field season debut, O'Henley recorded the top hammer throw in the NAIA over the weekend with a mark of 178 feet 2 inches, making him the CCC's Field Athlete of the Week. It was good for runner-up status at the Lane Invitational and met the provisional-qualifying standard for the NAIA Championships.
