MARION, Indiana – Southern Oregon University has nine individuals and 12 total entries at the NAIA Outdoor Championships, which run Wednesday through Friday at the Indiana Wesleyan Track & Field Complex.
Following is a meet overview in order of event schedules:
WOMEN'S EVENTS
HEPTATHLON
7:30 a.m. Wednesday: 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m
8 a.m. Thursday: Long Jump, Javelin, 800m
SOU Entry: Abi Stevens (5th of 16, 4,827)
Of Note: In nine career national competitions, including indoor and outdoor, Stevens has never finished lower than seventh. In the heptathlon, she placed seventh as a freshman and fourth last year as a sophomore. She's coming off a third-place effort in the pentathlon February at the NAIA Indoor Championships, and in her only heptathlon outing this spring PR'd with 4,827 points at the Cascade Conference Championships. The top seed, British Columbia's Rebecca Dutchak, set a CCC record with 5,109 at the same meet.
10,000 METERS
Final: 5:20 p.m. Wednesday
SOU Entries: Alejandra Lopez (9th of 28, 36:53.25),
Cammeo Ramirez (12th, 36:59.97)
Of Note: Lopez and Ramirez took over the Nos. 3 and 5 spots on SOU's all-time 10K performance list in their only attempts at the race this spring. Lopez is back in the race for the second year in a row, having placed 10th in 2023. The Raiders are the only team with a pair of top-12 seeds in the 10K, looking to produce their first All-American in the race since 2018. Jessa Perkinson won it for SOU eight years ago.
5,000 METERS
Prelims: 3:45 p.m. Thursday
Final: 1:30 p.m. Friday
SOU Entries: Alejandra Lopez (30th of 34, 17:36.30),
Alyssa Johnson (31st, 17:36.98)
Of Note: Lopez, a senior, and Johnson, a freshman, will attempt to give the Raiders their first 5K All-American in five years. They're already the fourth- and fifth-fastest individuals on the Raiders' all-time performance list, and Lopez's PR this season was 26 seconds faster than her previous best.
HIGH JUMP
Final: 1:30 p.m. Friday
SOU Entry: Abi Stevens (t-15th of 32, 1.68m)
Of Note: If Stevens lands among the top-eight in both the heptathlon and the high jump, she'll match Jessa Perkinson for the most All-America honors in SOU track and field history with 11. She got off to a slow start in the high jump this season before clearing 5 feet 6 inches in each of her last two outings. Stevens placed fifth at the NAIA Outdoor Championships in the event as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore, and has added a pair of top-seven efforts on the national indoor stage.
MEN'S EVENTS
JAVELIN
Final: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday
SOU Entry: Andrew Mitchell (2nd of 28, 67.53m)
Of Note: Mitchell broke his own school record by throwing 221 feet 7 inches in March and has exceeded the 200-foot mark in four consecutive meets since. After placing eighth at the NAIA Outdoor Championships as a sophomore, he threw 213-0 last year as a junior and had the lead until David Friedberg of Reinhardt (Ga.) went 216-4 on the last throw of the finals. Friedberg is back as the top seed by a wide margin, his best mark of the season standing at 249-7. Mitchell won the CCC title two weeks ago with a throw of 210-7. He is attempting to join Gary Berentsen (1964-66) as SOU's only three-time All-Americans in the event.
10,000 METERS
Final: 6:10 p.m. Wednesday
SOU Entry: Jalen Griego (24th of 35, 30:59.79)
Of Note: Griego missed a large chunk of the season due to injury/illness and didn't take his only crack at the 10K until April 26, when he hit the NAIA's 'A' standard with two-tenths of a second to spare at the Oregon State High Performance Meet. The first-year Raider will attempt to become SOU's first All-American in the race since seventh-place Noah Oberriter in 2019.
DISCUS
Final: 3 p.m. Thursday
SOU Entry: Andrew Mitchell (17th of 30, 49.88m)
Of Note: Mitchell's main event is inarguably the javelin, but he became the first thrower at the CCC Championships in 23 years to win both the javelin and discus titles. The senior is a month removed from registering his PR of 163-8 at the Raider Invitational. He also qualified in the discus last year and placed 19th with a mark of 150-11; his new PR would have put him among the top-10.
5,000 METERS
Prelims: 4:35 p.m. Thursday
Final: 1:55 p.m. Friday
SOU Entries: Frankie Maciel (11th of 40, 14:23.27),
Mason Weisgerber (19th, 14:32.55)
Of Note: Since earning All-CCC status in cross country during the fall, Maciel, a senior, and Weisgerber, a freshman, have been the Raider men's team's star distance runners throughout the year and are set to make their first appearances at the Outdoor Championships. Maciel was the 5K runner-up at the CCC Championships, and the qualifying time he ran on April 12 put him at No. 4 on SOU's all-time performance list. Weisgerber jumped to No. 7 on that list at the same meet, making him the Raiders' fastest true freshman ever in the race.
POLE VAULT
Final: 10 a.m. Friday
SOU Entry: Carson Le Bel (t-10th of 24, 4.80m)
Of Note: Le Bel has been trending in the right direction all season, recording the four top clearances of his young career over the last six weeks. His top mark, 15-9, came at the Raider Invitational, and he was unchallenged at the CCC Championships while winning the title on his first attempt at 15-5. He'll be in the mix to become the fifth individual ever from SOU to earn All-America status in the event.
