INDEPENDENCE –
Alyssa Johnson repeated as runner-up and newcomer
Sophia Stubblefield secured all-conference honors to lift the No. 18 Southern Oregon women's cross country team to their seventh consecutive second-place finish at the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Friday morning at Oak Knoll Golf Course.
Johnson, now a three-time cross country All-CCC runner, cleared the 6,000-meter course in 21 minutes 34.8 seconds, her second fastest time ever. Stubblefield joined Johnson as an All-Conference performer by placing 10th in 22:30.
No. 5 College of Idaho couldn't be touched, claiming its seventh straight title with a score of 39 points by putting six runners in the top-15. The Raiders accumulated 91 points and finished ahead of 16th-ranked Eastern Oregon who scored 102 points.
Alaina Casady (23:03) placed 18th,
Emily Picard (23:14) finished 22nd, and
Ashley Jentzsch (24:28) came in 41st to round out SOU's scoring.
"We were not 100%," said head coach
Grier Gatlin. "We had some sickness, but our seventh (
Natalie Sandeen) and fourth (Picard) runners really came through today. That definitely helped."
SOU was fifth in the team standings at the 2K mark, but aggressive moves from the trio of Casady, Picard, and Jentzsch moved them to second by the 4K split. They finished with a team time of 1:54:51 with a 2:53 spread.
Four more Raiders crossed the line after Jentzsch: 50th-place Sandeen, 54th-place
Mercedes Harms (25:00), 64th-place
Kayla Gorchels (25:35), and 88th-place Izzy Calingasan (28:24).
Alauna Carstens of Evergreen State (Wash) claimed the individual title in 20:49, running away from the rest of the field straight from the gun. Johnson crossed the 2K mark with the chase pack before splitting away and moving to second place by the 4K split. She finished the race 15 seconds ahead of the third place finisher.
This is the eighth consecutive season the Raiders have had two or more All-Conference performances.
The Raiders will have two weeks to prepare for the Nov. 21 NAIA Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. Johnson will be the team's lone All-American returning to the race.
