ASHLAND –
Oliver Ausland made more Southern Oregon University golf history on Wednesday when he was voted the NAIA Golfer of the Week.
Ausland, a junior from Grants Pass, became the first Raider ever to earn the award following last week's six-stroke victory at the Simpson Invitational. It was his second tournament medalist performance in a row, which marked another unprecedented accomplishment at SOU.
At Simpson, Ausland finished 11-under par over three rounds. He birdied eight times in the first round, five times in the second and five times in the third, giving him the lowest tournament score ever recorded by a Raider.
The effort came on the heels of a 3-under showing at the RMC Intercollegiate, where he shared medalist plaudits with British Columbia's Leighton Wright.
Since the start of the RMC Intercollegiate, Ausland has shot even-par or better in six consecutive rounds.
He and the Raiders are back in action April 13-14 in Portland at the Tournament of Knights, the third of four Cascade Conference-counting events on their schedule. Through the first two CCC tournaments – which both took place during the fall – Ausland ranks 31st in stroke average at 75.3.
