Defense steals show against Yotes as SOU goes to 7-0

ASHLAND – A few days after winning an NAIA Offensive Player of the Week award, The College of Idaho's Darius-James Peterson was a marked man Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium.

Though seventh-ranked Southern Oregon came up 2 minutes 15 seconds short of the team's first shutout in 14 years, the Raiders' defense turned in a relentless effort against the sophomore quarterback in a 36-7 victory. They ran up 11 sacks, four of which were credited to junior defensive end Sean Rogers – the highest team and individual totals yet for SOU in a Frontier Conference game.

On the way to their first 7-0 record since 1947, the Raiders forced five first-half turnovers en route to a 29-0 lead. Tyson Cooper totaled a team-high 12 tackles, Rogers had 10 and both forced fumbles that were lost by Peterson. He finished with 108 rushing yards and C of I's only touchdown but completed just seven of 18 passes, one of which was picked off by Oshay Dunmore.

On the other side of the ball, Tanner Trosin completed 26 of 39 passes for 304 yards – marking his ninth straight 300-plus-yard game – with touchdown throws of 22 yards to Jordan Suell (his team-leading sixth of the season) and seven yards to Ricky Te'o (the first of his career). Bronsen Ader pulled in nine catches for 115 yards and his third triple-digit game of the season.

Rey Vega put the Raiders in front on a four-yard TD run three minutes into the game and finished with 127 total yards on 17 touches. After Trosin's 14-yard touchdown rush to end the first quarter and his connection with Suell to start the second, Michael Roots got loose for a 28-yard score that capped the first-half scoring midway through the second period.

The game turned ugly for the Yotes (3-5 overall, 3-4 Frontier) in a hurry: They turned the ball over three times on their first five plays from scrimmage in the opening five minutes.

Isiah Carter pitched in two sacks, while CJ Jones, James Porter, Josh Cline and Collin Crown got in on one apiece. Keegan Lawrence made six tackles and joined AJ Cooper, August Forrest III and Porter in recovering fumbles, and Cooper forced one, too. To preserve the shutout near the end of the third quarter, Forrest also blocked a 37-yard field-goal attempt.

C of I's point total was the lowest for an SOU opponent since a 31-6 win against Montana Western on Oct. 11, 2014. The Raiders have held seven straight opponent under 30 points for the first time since 2003.

Trosin's TD passes brought his career total to 39, breaking a tie with Mark Helfrich on the all-time SOU list. This season, he's thrown for 17 TDs and just two interceptions.

The Raiders are now 13-1 all-time at home against unranked Frontier opponents, winning by an average of 31 points. With three regular-season games to go, they'll host another one next Saturday in Montana Western. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
