ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's
Andrew Mitchell and
Cammeo Ramirez were named NAIA Track and Field Athletes of the Week on Wednesday by the national office.
Mitchell, a senior who made his season debut with a record-breaking throw in the javelin last weekend, was joined by Ramirez and
Mason Weisgerber in being voted Cascade Conference Rize Laboratory Athletes of the Week on Monday. In his first appearance since placing second at last year's NAIA Outdoor Championships, Mitchell won the javelin at the Lane Open with a throw of 221 feet 7 inches to supplant his own SOU record of 217-3 and eclipse the NAIA 'A' standard. It put him at No. 1 on the NAIA's performance list, a spot he also holds in the discus after throwing 151-3 to place third of 40 at the meet.
Ramirez won the women's 1,500 (4:49.34) at Lane and was the runner-up in the 800 (2:27.13), taking early leads on both CCC performance lists. Weisgerber won the men's 1,500 (4:00.19) and placed seventh in the 800 (2:01.95).
Minus their distance runners, the Raiders compete again Friday and Saturday at Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational.
