Raiders push No. 2 Warriors again in 3-2 setback

ASHLAND – The No. 7-ranked Southern Oregon beach volleyball team went toe-to-toe with No. 2 Corban again before falling just short in a 3-2 Cascade Conference decision Friday at the Raider Beach Courts.

The dual was all tied up with only the 1-pairs left on the sand when Emma Bischoff and Megan Dennis finished it, fighting off Madi Gray and Tessa Zimmermann in extra points both sets of a 22-20, 23-21 victory.

The win clinched a second consecutive CCC regular season championship for the Warriors (15-1 overall, 13-0 CCC), and gave them hosting rights for the CCC Tournament.

The second-place Raiders (8-7, 6-3) made it interesting after falling behind 2-0. Their No. 5 pair, Skyy Nihipali-Botelho and Kendal Hadwick, got them on the board with a straight-set victory, before their No. 3 pair, Lucretia Benolken and Kira Sandoval, became the first CCC team to knock off Emmi Marks and Jessica McMillian in a 21-18, 11-21, 15-12 thriller.

"There was some very good volleyball being played by both teams," SOU coach Paul Elliott said. "I feel we are continuing to get better and we'll get another shot at them in the conference tournament."

Since the start of last season, six of seven duals between SOU and Corban have ended in 3-2 scores.

The Raiders have their last home duals at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, both against Bushnell.
