MONMOUTH — Frankie Maciel took third in the 1,500-meter race out of 96 runners to pace the Raiders Friday night on Day 1 of the John Knight Twilight Invitational at McArthur Field on the campus of Western Oregon University.

The senior from Salinas ran the second-fastest time of his career and a season-best of 3 minutes 54.16 seconds, a near four-second improvement over his 1,500 opener at Hayward Field. Maciel sat in eighth place heading into the bell lap, passed three runners by the 200-meter mark, and two more over the final 100-meter stretch. It's the 14th fastest time in the NAIA this year and third in the Cascade Conference.

Trenton Abraham placed 44th (4:10.16) in his second 1,500 outing of the season. Both Abraham and Maciel double back for the 800 on Day 2 of the meet.

In the 5K, Hayden Roth took 27th with a personal best of 15:36.05. Sophomore Ashley Jentzsch finished 11th out of 19 (20:30.89).

For the sprints, Gracie Freudenthal made her season debut in the 400-meter hurdles, taking eighth in 1:08.93, and Rogue Newton placed 19th (59.26). Freudenthal races the open 400 and Newton in the 4 x 400-meter relay on Day 2.

Meanwhile, off the track, Ilyhia Greely took fifth out of 39 entrants in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 45.46 meters (149 feet 1 inch), and Derrick Bennett placed 23rd (37.82m/124-01). Greely and Bennett return to action on Day 2 for discus, with Bennett also competing in shot put.

The meet resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. for field events and 11 a.m. for track.
