Mitchell nets 2 All-CCC awards, 4x400 team wins title for Raider men

ASHLAND – Sophomore thrower Andrew Mitchell doubled up on All-Cascade Conference honors and the Southern Oregon men's 4x400-meter relay team ended the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank on a high note Saturday at Raider Stadium.

Mitchell was the runner-up in the javelin and placed third in the discus to total 14 of the Raiders' 86 team points. His javelin throw of 198 feet 11 inches was the third-best in SOU history and moved him up to No. 9 on the national performance list heading into the NAIA Outdoor Championships. He went 154-4 in the discus, where seventh-place Matthew O'Henley (137-8) and eighth-place Jonathan Ashford (136-11) were also scorers.

In the meet finale, the 4x400 team delivered SOU's first event win of the weekend as Cade O'Connor, AJ Sandvig, Damian Williams and Shane McLaughlin defended the Raiders' 2021 title with a time of 3 minutes 20.46 seconds.

O'Connor had a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (54.49) and Sandvig was fifth in the 800 (1:53.00). McLaughlin placed eighth in both the 100 (10.96) and 200 (22.43), and Jacob Trone scored at seventh place in the discus (42-0).

The Raiders were fifth in the team standings. TJ Davis and Field Athlete of the Meet Allexander Kosel led Eastern Oregon to its second consecutive title with 190 points to second-place College of Idaho's 178. Davis totaled 42 points with two wins over six individual events, while Kosel defended his titles in the long and triple jumps.

A chronological recap of Saturday's events is below:

JAVELIN: UBC freshman Cameron Kuziak pulled off an upset as the No. 3 seed , throwing 202 feet 9 inches to earn the win. SOU's Andrew Mitchell, the No. 5 seed, also put forth a season-best effort at 198-11 for second place, and EOU's Moses McAninch was third at 178-3.

TRIPLE JUMP: After winning the long jump on, EOU's Allexander Kosel defended another title and made himself an automatic national qualifier with a triple-jump of 48-6 ¾. C of I's Nate Griswold put himself in the NAIA 'B' category with a second-place mark of 47-7, and EOU's DJ Wilson stole the third All-CCC spot by winning a tiebreaker at 45-3 ½.

HIGH JUMP: EOU had five scorers and swept All-CCC honors behind freshman Tyler Jones, who cleared 6-5. Teammates Allexander Kosel (6-5) and John Stuvland (6-4) placed second and third in the Mountaineers' 29-point effort.

DISCUS: A shot-put champion on Friday, C of I's Bryan Terry doubled up on titles and tripled up on all-conference recognition in becoming a back-to-back champion with a mark of 156-2. The Yotes had four scorers in the event and also produced the runner-up in Stephen Campbell (154-9). SOU's Andrew Mitchell threw 154-4 to place third.

100 METERS: Jaron Carter collected the first-ever 100-meter crown for Bushnell with a time of 10.68 seconds. Carter clocked a season-best, as did second-place Daniel Dixon (10.72) of Bushnell and third-place Coldy Milmine (10.77) of EOU.

800 METERS: In a neck-and-neck finish, LCSC's Clayton VanDyke won the 800 for the second year in a row with a time of 1:56.36, edging runner-up Ryan Goudron (1:51.93) of UBC. The Thunderbirds produced three of the top-six and their Paul Fisher (1:52.38) earned the third All-CCC spot.

400-METER HURDLES: CCC decathlon champion TJ Davis of EOU claimed his second title and fourth individual all-conference honor of the meet with a time of 53.46. He beat out C of I's defending champion Lane Maher, who was runner-up in 53.99. LCSC's Ike Hopper (54.34) placed third.

200 METERS: After winning Multnomah's first-ever 400 title on Friday, Roderick Soto picked up the Lions' first CCC 200 win in 21.90 seconds – beating runner-up Chase Haagensen of UBC by just three-hundredths of a second. Cody Milmine of EOU placed third for the second time at the meet in 10.77 seconds, beating UBC's Riley Beecroft by two-thousandths.

5,000 METERS: Robert Swoboda became Corban's first CCC champion in any distance race, winning comfortably in 14:39.76. LCSC's Cole Olsen, Friday's 10K champ, was second in 14:48.64, and UBC's Thomas Nobbs (15:02.49) placed third.

4x400-METER RELAY: SOU got its first event win of the weekend in the meet finale as Cade O'Connor, AJ Sandvig, Damian Williams and Shane McLaughlin logged a time of 3:20.46. LCSC (3:21.08) and C of I (3:21.16) were next in as All-CCC performers.
