Hall of Fame
The 1962 football team celebrated its 50th anniversary with a spot in the SOU Hall of Fame. Under head coach Al Akins, the Raiders finished the season with an 8-1 record and the Oregon Collegiate Conference Championship. The squad opened the season with an impressive 28-0 victory over Chico State before suffering its lone setback with a 20-7 defeat at Lewis & Clark. A 21-7 victory over Sacramento State was the start of a string of seven straight victories to wrap up the program's second straight conference title.
The Raiders won back-to-back road games at Eastern Oregon (39-7) and Oregon Tech (50-0), then blew by Portland State (41-26), Western Oregon (12-6) and Weber State (26-3). The Raiders wrapped up the season with a 27-24 come-from-behind victory over Whitworth on Thanksgiving Day in Medford. The Raiders were led by conference All-Stars Kerm Bennett, Doyle Bransom, John Buck, Howard Hartman, Dave Hughes, George Moses, Glen Moses, Jess Munyon, Doug Olsen and Glenn Vandergaw. Bransom, Buck, Hartman, Moses, Munyon and Olsen were also named All-Region.
