Southern was Southern Oregon's fifth NAIA All-American football player and he became only the third first-team selection in 1983.  The Grants Pass native earned the national distinction that year after he carried the ball for a school-record 246 times and became the first Raider running back ever to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season (1,386).  His team-best 12 touchdowns helped the Raiders to a nine-victory season and a NAIA District II title, the school's first football crown since 1965.  The two-time Evergreen Conference all-star finished his career with a program record 540 carries as well as 2,414 rushing yards.
