Gary Berentsen holds the distinction of earning the school's first NAIA track and field All-America honor. A field athlete from 1963-67, Berentsen finished second in the javelin at the NAIA National Championships in 1964. He followed that up with his second All-American honor in 1965, finishing third at the National Championships. The next year, Berentsen became the school's second-ever national champion when he won the NAIA's top honor in the javelin. With the national title, Berentsen became the first three-time NAIA All-American in school history. Even more impressive, Berentsen achieved this feat at a time when only the top three finishers in each event were received All-American recognition.
