Gates became Southern Oregon's second women's track and field NAIA All-American in 1987 after finishing as the national runner-up in the javelin competition with a school-record toss of 156-10. In 1988, she surpassed her previous career-best with a 158-3 javelin heave, a Raider record that stood for 10 years. In addition to capturing a pair of regional javelin titles, Gates was the first SOU female athlete to earn NAIA Academic All-American accolades in 1987. As an outside hitter on the 1987 volleyball team, Gates garnered Cascade Conference all-star status after trying the school's season service ace record (68) and leading the team in kills (294) and digs (394).
