Byrne is the first SOU track athlete to win two national championships, capturing the NAIA heptathlon title in 1988 and '89. Including a sixty-place finish in the 1989 NAIA outdoor high jump championships, she finished her career as the school's first three-time female All-American. The Dallas, Oregon native won the regional heptathlon, high jump, long jump and high hurdles events three consecutive seasons and broke seven school records during her career. (Five still stand.) Byrne, also the 1988 NAIA indoor high jump runner-up, was named the NAIA District II Athlete of the Year in 1988 and '90.
