Howard Hartman was a two-sport athlete, excelling at football and track. On the gridiron, Hartman set school and Oregon Collegiate Conference records for receptions, yards gained, and touchdown receptions each year he played. Hartman was named to the OCC All-Conference Team in 1960, '61, and '62. He was named to the NAIA All-American Team for the 1962 season. In track, he held team records in the high and low hurdle races. He was the 1962 Oregon Collegiate Conference Champion in both the high and low hurdle events. Howard was honored as the SOSC Student-Athlete of the Year in 1962, and graduated in the spring of 1963.
