Claude Hines enrolled at Southern Oregon Normal School in the fall of 1928 after turning down a football scholarship to the University of Hawaii. He played football, basketball, baseball, and track. Said teammate Con Mahoney, "He could throw a football 100 yards." Al Gould, sportwriter from the Oregon Journal Newspaper, remembered "he was a Bronco Nagurski, Sammy Baugh, and Frank Merriwell all wrapped in one package." He captained the football team in 1930.
